Adult Foster Care

Adult Foster Care (also known as Adult Family Care) is a MassHealth program which can support individuals age 16 and older living in the community with related or non-related families. Participants and caregivers will be assessed for eligibility according to MassHealth regulations but key components are:

AFC participants must need daily supervision or assistance with at least one activity:

  • eating
  • bathing
  • dressing
  • toileting
  • ambulating or transferring

AFC caregivers can be family members if they are not legal guardians. They receive:

  • nursing and case management supports
  • financial compensation of $9,000 to $18,000 per year.

Shared Living is a Department of Developmental Services and Department of Children and Families funded program which matches children and adults with non-related caregivers and families. Participants must be referred by above mentioned agencies.

Adult Family Care and Shared Living are combined into our HelpingHomes program.
