Music Therapy and Autism Spectrum Disorder
6 Southside Road, Danvers
Presenter: Krystal Demaine, M.Ed., MT-BC, NMT
This free workshop will focus on relative role that melody and rhythm may play for children with autism, as highlighted in Melody Versus Rhythm: The Relative Role of Melody and Rhythm in Music Therapy for Two Boys with Autism (Demaine, 2009). Research using functional imaging indicates a connection between music and language in the brain. Since many children with autism have a tendency toward music, a child’s success in language development may be contingent upon understanding how they process music. It is hypothesized that children show a specific aptitude either melody or rhythm which may help parents and therapists alike offer more specific interventions to help facilitate functional development. Recruitment for a forthcoming pilot study to examine how well children with autism imitate melodic and rhythmic structures in music will be introduced at the end of the session.
